Electrical Matting Factsheet
Martins Rubber Electrical Matting now represents even better value.
Most importantly, the matting is UK manufactured and fully tested for
electrical insulation properties to BS921.
BS921 was first published in 1976 and its main criteria demand that:-
100% of the mat is tested at 15kV for 1 minute & the leakage stipulation met.
The mat is clearly marked with the test standard,
date and identification mark of the manufacturer.
The dimensions meet the specification.
The rubber compound meets the physical property requirements.
Both our 6mm (11 kV) and 9.5mm (15kV) grades are 100% electrically tested thus
eliminating any worries that contamination, porosity or holes in the rubber will
cause an unacceptable danger to life.
If any of the above are not met, then the product does not conform to the standard,
no matter what any Certificate of Conformity says!
Applications
The Factories Acts require the provision of permanent insulation to prevent danger
from shock to persons employed in the generation, transformation, distribution or
use of electricity. Electrical Matting is the recommended safety flooring at
switchboards, sub-stations, transformers and electrical workbenches.
In temporary applications, portable mats should be used.
Service Information
If joins are unavoidable when laying Switchboard Matting, the pieces should butt
together with no gaps between. Mats shall have a minimum width of 900mm to accord
with the Regulations concerning the minimum width of a working platform or
passageway associated with a Switchboard on which there are exposed connectors
(for voltages up to 650v). Where the Regulations do not apply,
the same minimum width is recommended. It is stressed that rubber mats should not
afford the sole means of protection for those working on electrical circuits
and wherever possible further adequate precautions should be taken against risk of
shock and short circuit. In this connection, attention is drawn to the
relevant Health & Safety Acts.
