A rubber piston seal is used to contain pressure on one side of a piston without leakage, therefore allowing maximum mechanical effort to be applied to moving the piston along the bore of a cylinder.
Pneumatic and hydraulic piston seal design
At Martin’s Rubber, our rubber piston seals can be driven either hydraulically (hydraulic piston seals) or pneumatically (pneumatic piston seals), with appropriate piston seal designs for each system, and application. The rubber piston seal is intended to prevent leakage across the piston and thus maximise the efficiency of system. Our range of piston seals for hydraulic cylinders and pneumatic cylinders are available in either single action or double action. Single acting piston seals contain pressure on one side of the piston, whereas double action piston seals contain pressure on both sides of a piston. Individual piston seal profile designs show specific behaviours and performance, which need to be in line with the application´s requirement.
Pneumatic and hydraulic piston seal materials
When it comes to choosing the right rubber piston seal for your project, it is important to take certain factors into consideration, such as:
- Expected pressures
- The friction loss acceptable
- Whether a single acting piston seal or a double acting piston seal is required
- Whether the piston head is integral or split
The design of the piston seal head will determine the type of rubber piston seal profile and material that can be used in the application. Many high-pressure systems require very stiff, robust piston seals and the associated guide rings to control the action of the piston. In this case the piston will often split into several parts so that piston seals do not need to be stretched over the piston head and snapped into place, but can simply be assembled in place and the piston head bolted on to the ram rod with a securing nut, once fully built.
Pneumatic and hydraulic piston seal sizes
As rubber specialists, we can manufacture bespoke pneumatic or hydraulic piston seals using CNC machinery in order to produce the right sized rubber piston seals for your specific project. We can also add material to compensate for worn or re-manufactured piston or cylinder conditions, and help restore the original performance of used equipment as well as provide components for new build designs.
View our standard profiles for general guidance, where you will find our standard hydraulic or pneumatic piston seals listed under either single action or double action types listed as “K” profiles. Custom rubber piston seal profiles can be rapid manufactured in a variety of different materials depending on the application, and we also stock standard products for immediate shipment.
