Wiper Scraper Seals

What is a Wiper Scraper Seal?

Rubber Wiper Seal - Style A101The function of a wiper scraper seal is that of an axial seal, in creating a tight fit whilst still allowing a reciprocating ram rod to pass through the inner bore of the seal. Also commonly known as Wiper Seals, Scraper Seals, or Dust Seal products, the primary use of a wiper scraper seal is to prevent dust, debris and moisture entering the gland housing of sealing system and damaging the pressure seals of a fluid system as reciprocating or rotating parts move, with expensive or even dangerous results. Any foreign body that enters the hydraulic wiper seals’ housing can damage the rod, the cylinder and even cause damage to the other seals that operate within the system.

Wiper Scraper Seals Styles, Materials and Sizes

It is important that the correct material is chosen for any rubber wiper seal application, as damage to rods and cylinders, and the seals that operate on them, usually starts from a failed or inappropriate rubber wiper seal. Martin’s Rubber manufacture wiper rings in an array of materials , including Nitrile, Viton and Polyurethane. Consideration needs to be given to the environment expected, the friction losses acceptable, and whether energisation is necessary. For this reason, we supply a range of dynamic seal products that utilize an interference fit on the rod to provide an accurate closure and thus a reliable seal to protect against the penetration of dirt and dust, whilst still allowing the backflow of a residual oil film. These products include:

  • Clip-in wiper seal products
  • Press-In wiper seal products
  • Snap-in seals / snap-on seal products
  • Multi-step wiper scraper seals
  • Dust seal products

Wiper rings in Polyurethane, Viton and Nitrile, either CNC machined for snap in fitting or moulded and bonded into a metal case for press fitting.

Most Popular Snap-In and Press-In Wiper Scraper Seals

Below is a list of the more popular snap in and press in seals and rubber wiper seal options available at Martin’s Rubber in a range of materials and sizes.

A101 Snap-In Wiper seal

A101The A101 Snap-In Wiper has a ‘clip-in’, or ‘snap-in’ function that creates a tight fit whilst still allowing a reciprocating ram rod to pass through the inner bore of the seal. It is stepped to fit into suitable gland housings. This particular snap seal conforms to:

  • BS 6852:1987
  • BS ISO 6195:2013 type E

A102 Snap-In Wiper seal

A102The main use of the A102 Snap-In Wiper seal is to block any debris, dust or moisture from entering the housing of the sealing system. This seal is not stepped, for housings that accept this style of seal. This dust seal conforms to:

  • BS 6852:1987
  • BS ISO 6195:2013 type B

A103 Press-In Wiper seal

A103The main role of the A103 Press-In Wiper seal is to stop any dust from damaging the pressure seals within a fluid system as various reciprocating parts move. This is a two part seal which has a rigid outer case to press fit into a gland, containing a flexible inner seal to perform the required scraping action. This rubber wiper seal conforms to:

  • BS 6852:1987
  • BS ISO 6195:2013 type B
