U-Rings and U-Seals

What are u-seals?

U-seals, or rod u-seals, are regarded as one of the most important seals on any type of fluid power equipment, as they work to prevent fluid from within the cylinder from seeping out. Rod u-seals are seen as critical components, as leakage through the rod u-seal can reduce equipment performance and, in some extreme situations, can result in environmental problems.

U-rings must provide an excellent resistance to friction, abrasion and wear. The use of a u-seal is recommended with the following:

  • Lubrication oils
  • Mineral oil-based hydraulic fluids
  • Hydraulic oils
  • HFA fluids
  • HFB fluids

U-rings are manufactured using an extremely high-performance elastomer,  which guarantees a sealing solution with low permanent deformation.

U-ring applications

U-ring seals feature an array of benefits which make them the ideal sealing products for a number of applications. U-seals exhibit excellent resistance to wear. It is for these reasons that u-rings are often used in:

  • Pneumatic cylinders
  • Hydraulic cylinders
  • Presses
  • Lifts

U-ring seal design

The function of a u-ring or u-seal is to provide a pressure seal in either a static or dynamic application. They can be symmetrical in section or asymmetrical depending on whether they are piston or rod working. For this reason, they are often referred to as rod u-seals or piston u-seals. U-seals can be energised with meander springs or o-rings in the groove of the seal and have additional wiper or scraper features added.

Careful consideration needs to be given to the environment in which the rod u-seal or piston u-seal is expected to be used and the friction losses acceptable. Particular attention should also be given when pairing the rod u-seal and the wiper, in order to ensure optimal sealing performance. This is because, if a less aggressive u-ring is paired with an aggressive wiper, the wiper can scrape away the very thin film of oil on the rod during the return stroke, which may consequently lead to leaks in the system. Therefore, it is imperative that the u-ring is used in conjunction with the most appropriate wiper.
