MR Thumpercross Reunion 2013, motocross action with Martin’s Rubber

Martin’s Rubber sponsored the MR Thumpercross Series between 1997 and 2004, as part of the promotion of our MR Seal Kits product range. Establishing and promoting what became one of the most successful national Motocross Series in the UK developed a lot of camaraderie amongst the competitors, organisers and officials, so it was a pleasure to organise a reunion race in early 2013. The Series was the first event to be run at what was then the new Pontrilas track near Hereford back in 2001, and it was wonderful to revisit the venue this year as part of Round 1 of the Dave Thorpe Evo Series, which caters for motocross bikes made before 1990. The meeting had classes for 125, 250 and 500cc bikes of this era, as well as a class for MR Thumpercross riders who were associated with the Series back in its heyday. Seeing many friendships and rivalries renewed was very pleasing, and there was a lot of banter going on in the pits and pitbox during the day, however it was also the case that racers never change, and the standard of riding and competition was excellent. Our 1997 Expert Champion Simon Wyse on his #8 KTM, despite tweaking his old knee injury just could not resist going through the pain barrier on the last lap of race three to take a top three finish and thus the overall win for the day, overcoming strong challenges from “Factory” Phil Mercer and Mike Deely. It was good to see people returning home with a smile on their faces having enjoyed a good days sport, and a chance to reminisce about trips all over the country and to France to take part in the MR Series, which is still fondly remembered even now by riders and spectators alike. There is some video footage of the event on our Youtube page, so please visit that to get a flavour of  what it is like to ride a British Championship track. This solid grounding in various areas of motorsport has stood the staff at Martin’s in good stead when it comes to understanding the challenges that our motorsport customers have to overcome, and our solutions have played a part in the successes of many customers over the years, and will continue to do so.
